Golden Temple Paid 2 Crores GST on Langar Items Which Feed 50,000 hungry people a day

Golden Temple: Amid much controversy and many hurdles, GST was successfully rolled out last year. Even then its journey hasn’t been very smooth. It impacted various sections on a massive scale. The government, on the other hand, has been assuring people and taking steps to resolve issues. But recently an alarming incident has come to the forefront.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee(SGPC) of the Golden Temple has alleged that the Golden Temple has paid upto 2 crore rupees in the form of GST until January 31st, 2018 that has been on the rations for langar which is the largest free community kitchen in the world.
The chairman of SGPC has confirmed the same and even the Union Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal has written to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to take up the matter. However, the Union Finance Minister has brushed it away as misleading. The only way to resolve this would be to institute an enquiry immediately to look into the facts and take the necessary measures.
GST Act has a provision to exempt certain institutions and businesses on the recommendation of the GST Council. If the allegation by SGPC comes out as true, this scheme should be extended to the Golden Temple’s community kitchen which does the noble job of feeding atleast 50,000 hungry people a day.
